Spanish club Atlético Madrid announced the acquisition of Colombia international Jackson Martinez from Portuguese club FC Porto on Wednesday, according to ESPN.
The 28-year-old striker signed a four-year deal with the Rojiblancos at an undisclosed amount after the team paid the £25 million (€35 million) transfer fee to the Azuis e brancos.
"We are very pleased with the agreement, because Jackson Martinez is an extraordinary striker, able to rapidly solve any attacking play inside the box," said Jose Luis Perez Caminero, sporting director of Atlético.
Caminero went on to say that the team is excited about the signing as the 6-foot-1 forward can use his head and both feet well when creating scoring opportunities. The team also coveted the same winning attitude that he brought to Porto since 2012.
Martinez was acquired by the Dragons in 2012 from Mexican club Chiapas FC, scoring 92 goals in 132 caps during his stint at the Primeira Liga.
The Quibdó, Colombia native helped the club become Portuguese champions during the 2012-2013 season and to finish third place and runner-up in the next two while winning Bola de Prata award in all three. He also led Porto to two straight Supertaça Cândido de Oliveira titles in 2012 and 2013.
Bleacher Report indicated that at his age, Martinez may be receiving some criticisms from Atlético fans with regards to his move to La Liga. It not yet clear how Diego Simeone will maximize Martinez's physical presence in the box and how long will the Colombian be able to adjust to the pace of the Spanish League before he can go back to his scoring form.
