LG has confirmed that another variant of the LG G4 will hit store shelves in the second half of 2015 though the specific release date remains unknown. Likely, the device will out-spec the G4 and it could become the Google Nexus 5 2015.
LG President Jun-ho Cho provided confirmation that a follow up to the G4 can be expected in the immediate months ahead, Phone Arena reported this week. The move is part of the ongoing efforts to further bolster LG's top performing businesses, which the company's smartphone and high-end television divisions.
And this upcoming G4 variant will be a few notches better in terms of build and specifications. In short, LG is working on another flagship phone that earlier this year has been referred to as the LG G4 Note. It is now known as the LG G4 Pro.
As LG is reported as the chosen builder of the rumored Nexus Bullhead, it is likely that the Korean device maker will model the handset, also labelled as the Nexus 5 2015, after the G4 Pro. And there are signs that indicate LG is heading that way:
Super premium phone in the making
LG is said to be making a flagship of flagships in the G4 Pro and Cho even described the company's upcoming offering as a "super premium phone." The company chief did not elaborate but the safe bet is to release a phone that fit in to the premium category.
The premium benchmark in the smartphone industry is currently set by Apple and Samsung and when LG hints of building a premium device, the likely agenda is to match or surpass what these two giants have to offer. This 2015, that would be the Galaxy S6 and Galaxy Note 5 for Samsung and for Apple - the iPhone 6S and iPhone 6S Plus. So the minimum expectation is the LG G4 Pro can readily stand side by side with these toys.
And if the G4 Pro will indeed be of the premium kind, inside and out, then it is wise for Google to make the device as base-model of the Nexus 5 2015. Doing so is the best chance for the Nexus maker to finally give its rivals, chiefly Apple and Samsung, a good fight.
Superlative specs
Save for the 6-inch screen specification, the G4 Pro specs so far fit with what the LG Nexus is. The former is said to sport a Snapdragon 820 chip, up to 4GB of RAM, a Quad HD panel with likely 2K of screen resolution and a headline main shooter of 20MP on the camera side. Superlative is written all over the G4 Pro, which Google will find hard to carry over, at least most of the specs, when the Nexus 5 2015 is finally unboxed.
The LG G4 Pro is a complete smartphone package that will give Google's LG Nexus the claw and teeth to slug it out with Apple's iPhone and Samsung's Galaxy.
Rollout timing
As mentioned by LG's Cho, his company's super premium phone will touchdown within the last six months of 2015. It could be that the device is halfway on its mass production stage and should become available between August and September.
Now the timing, even if delayed a bit, is somehow in sync with that of the usual Google Nexus release calendar that spas the last few months of the year. If the LG G4 Pro will be out by September then it is right on schedule to become one of the Google Nexus 2015 flagship, both of which are expected are take part on a release date reported to happen in late September that also involves Android M.
