Starring Tom Cruise, Christopher McQuarrie's "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" has topped the box office with $20.3 million domestic gross on its opening day.
"Mission Impossible - Rogue Nation" was released on July 31 in the United States, covering about 4,000 theaters. According to Los Angeles Times, the opening gross of McQuarrie's action film could lure more audience, allowing the film to potentially hit more than $50 million before the end of the week.
McQuarrie's film is assumed to have an opening weekend gross is at $52.6 million, which is more than $100,000 than Paramount's forecast, as per Deadline. Among the "Mission: Impossible" films, "Mission: Impossible - Rogue Nation" places second to John Woo's "Mission: Impossible II," which grossed an estimated $57.8 million on its opening weekend in 2000.
McQuarrie's "Mission: Impossible II" is followed by John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein's comedy film "Vacation," which got $4.51 million, and Peyton Reed's superhero film "Ant-Man," which got $3.65 million, on July 28.
Playing the role of agent Ethan Hunt in McQuarrie's film, Cruise previously told Jon Stewart on "The Daily Show" that the franchise is also going to have a sequel. Cruise and the production team are starting to work on the next installment, with the filming scheduled to start next summer.
"Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" follows agent Ethan Hunt, along with his team, as they face the anti-IMF group called The Syndicate. The film stars Cruise as Hunt, Simon Pegg, Jeremy Renner, Rebecca Ferguson, Alec Baldwin, Ving Rhames, and Sean Harris, among others.
McQuarrie's "Mission Impossible: Rogue Nation" is showing in theaters. Meanwhile, the release date of the "Mission: Impossible" follow-up film is yet to be announced. Watch the trailer here:
