Miguel Cotto and Canelo Alvarez are scheduled to clash on November 21 in what could possibly be the "Fight of the Year."
Final details are being ironed out in negotiations for a superfight at the middleweight division between WBC Middleweight champion Miguel Cotto and Saul "Canelo" Alvarez in what could be the best fight of the year.
Both sides want the fight. Golden Boy Promotions, which handles Canelo and Roc Nation Sports, which has Miguel Cotto are very eager to get things done. The final announcement is being held up, apparently because of Gaby Peñagarícano, Cotto's adviser.
Oscar de la Hoya, head of GBP and boxing's original Golden Boy told ElNuevo dia.com (through Boxing News 24) that he already wanted to announce the fight but Gaby was fussing over a rematch clause.
"It's not Cotto because I know Cotto wants the fight," said de la Hoya. "I don't think Cotto knows what's going on. It's his advisor that's holding up the fight, Gaby Peñagarícano. We haven't announced the fight because we haven't agreed on the terms of a rematch clause with Peñagarícano."
Considering that this is a big money fight, it's almost obvious that both fighters would want to make a rematch. But speculation is that Peñagarícano is wary of the WBC middleweight mandatory challenger Gennady "GGG" Golovkin.
Under WBC rules, the winner of this bout and eventual champion would have to grant Golovkin his title shot. The only way to avoid this is for the champion to vacate the title. The possibility that Cotto loses and Canelo fights GGG might cause him to pursue a different path.
However, there is also another angle that might be explored. Cotto is now being trained by Manny Pacquiao's trainer, Freddie Roach and after the TKO victory teased nemesis Floyd Mayweather, telling Boxing Junkie that "Miguel's big enough and tough enough to beat him."
Many observers believe that the Sept.12 bout against Andre Berto would not be Money May's last. A magic number of 50 would catapult him over Rocky Marciano's 49-0.
It's a long shot, but stranger things have happened in the world of boxing.
