Argentina's Nicolas Otamendi (middle) is targeted by Manchester City.

Valencia CF center back Nicolás Otamendi had been the target of Louis van Gaal and Manchester United during the whole transfer window period, but latest reports were out that neighboring rival club Manchester City might overtake the Old Trafford giants in acquiring the services of the Argentina international.

ESPN reported that the Citizens are planning a £35-million bid for the Argentine defender, something which the Spanish club was said to be amenable.

Manuel Pellegrini is also currently preparing an offer to acquire Belgian winger Kevin De Bruyne from German club VfL Wolfsburg for a fee of £47 million, which would significantly strengthen their midfield that already has Yaya Touré and Raheem Sterling.

City had already spent £71 million on new acquisitions this summer, including the £49-million mega-deal that sent Sterling from Liverpool to the Etihad in the middle of July. There were rumors that they might reach the £150-million mark before the transfer window closes.

Meanwhile, SkySports indicated that van Gaal is no longer interested in acquiring Otamendi. It was reported last month that the Red Devils' boss was concerned about his team's back field and defense entering the new Premier League season.

There had been speculations of a possible defender signing for United, but it looks like the 63-year-old Dutch mentor is sticking to his defensive lineup of Daley Blind, Luke Shaw, Chris Smalling, and Matteo Darmian at the moment. Phil Jones is also a reliable backup that could start games as well.

This reported withdrawal of van Gaal paved the way for Pellegrini to place an offer for Otamendi.
