Roger Federer Vs Andy Murray Battle For No.2! Cincinnati Cup To Decide Who Will Enter the US Open In Second Spot

Roger Federer and Andy Murray

Roger Federer lost his no.2 ranking when he took a break from the Rogers Cup. But now he wants to take it back from Andy Murray.

Andy Murray wrested the no.2 spot from Roger Federer by beating World no.1 Novak Djokovic and taking the Rogers Cup. It was a grueling match that took three hours. It also broke an eight match losing run to the dominating Serbian which extended from 2013 Wimbledon.

Murray is very cautious with his hard-earned achievement. He spoke to Sky Sports as he notes the unpredictability of the sport.

"It's hard to say. I lost in the first round of a tournament last week in a match many probably weren't expecting me to lose," he admits. "Things can get better very quickly and they can get worse very quickly in sport, so it's important for me to analyse what went well this week and things I can still improve on."

Those are rather ominous words as the Swiss former no.1 is well rested after skipping Montreal, and is expected to play with a vengeance. Federer has won more Grand Slam titles than anyone and he is not used to a 3rd ranking.

The Cincinnati Masters draws have been released and Steve G Tennis has predictions on exciting matches.

He notes that Federer and Murray may be on a collision course (based on the draws and projected victories) to face each other in the semifinal.

Possible semifinal match:  "Federer vs. Murray - Federer in 3 sets : The battle for the 'World No.2 ranking' and a golden opportunity to avoid Novak until the finals at Flushing Meadows. This is a tough one to predict but given the speed of the surface; expect Roger to take home this classic (Roger will have to win the title to reclaim the No.2 ranking)."

Will we see an epic showdown even before the US Open?
