Facebook's Moments app promotes photo sharing among friends who have been stockpiling images in their smartphones. On August, Tuesday the tech company released its first major update, allowing it to automatically convert synched shots into videos that can be personalized, customized, and shared on the social network.
The app's new feature is a small change. However, it could make Moments more appealing to Facebook users who are still on the fence.
A music video is made from groupings of at least six photos, according to Tech Crunch. Users can tap the video to customize it by altering the photo collection, and choosing from around a dozen background music options.
The background music can set the mood for the photos. Some choices for the mini-movies include adventurous soundtracks for outdoor treks, and a romantic tune for wedding photographs, according App Advice.
After finishing the video editing, users just tap the video to upload it to Facebook. People who users have shared the photos with will be tagged in the images.
Facebook Moments' new feature puts it in direct competition with similar services. That includes Google Photos' automatic animations.
Such automated features are super fun. However, they are also practical tools for photo collections in smartphones. They are piling up fast.
In addition, video sharing has become a fast-growing component of the social network. It has over 4 billion video views every day.
Facebook has been developing heavily in video features such as "Watch Later" buttons, and spotlighting the top videos in News Feed. This has helped it to sell a wider spectrum of video ads.
The Moments app was developed by the social media giant's Creative Labs initiative. While some of its previous apps have been duds, Moments seems to have some decent potential.
