Nintendo has decided to unleash their characters and become Hollywood stars. The news only means that any of the most favorite characters like Pauline of "Donkey Kong," Leon Powalski of "Star Fox," and Poo of "Earth Bound" will be on the big screen anytime.
Nintendo, after strongly guarding their video game characters for 15 years may again allow its characters to be featured in movies. Hollywood on the other hand, is always in the lookout for materials that can be made into big movie hits and the industry of video games is a large mining source for great audience appeal aside from books and comics. A lot of adaptations did really well coming from the latter two.
Mr. Shigeru Miyamoto, Nintendo's creative mastermind says that the company is slowly starting to open up about movie adaptations for their video games. They were quite hesitant to enter this field in the past, despite several opportunities, IGN reported.
Video games are the perfect source for movie adaptations. Everything is actually there for the taking not to mention the fanbase that are always on the lookout for something new from their beloved games. All it needs is a good working script.
"We've had, over the years, a number of people who have come to us and said 'Why don't we make a movie together-or we make a movie and you make a game and we'll release them at the same time?'. Because games and movies seem like similar mediums, people's natural expectation is we want to take our games and turn them into movies," Miyamoto shared the company's thoughts with Fortune.
Miyamoto also expressed that he thinks video games and movies are totally different things. According to him, video games are interactive, while movies are passive mediums.
