Facebook confirmed that it is the most popular social media site when one billion people used it in a single day, Aug 24. That translates into one in seven people on Earth logging in on Facebook, points out Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg.

As of June, Facebook had 968 million daily active users, although the number of members had exceeded one billion, reports the New York Times. Zuckerberg points out that when the company talks about its financials, it uses average numbers.

However, the Monday record-breaking event is differ. "This was the first time we reached this milestone, and it's just the beginning of connecting the world," Verge quotes Zuckerberg's post on Facebook.

He stressed the value of a more open and connected world which leads to a better world. Millions of Facebook members have acknowledged the role of the portal in reconnecting them with former classmates, friends, relatives, ex-boyfriends or girlfriends whom otherwise would remain living in their own lives, unaware of what has happened to their friend.

Facebook has also opened the door to new friendships, rekindled romances and helped provide information to people that would help them in their daily lives from job searches to recipes to where to buy a good mobile phone.

Zuckerberg adds, "It brings stronger relationships with those you love, a stronger economy with more opportunities, and a stronger society that reflects all of our values."

The big numbers that Facebook enjoys is because of its pioneering efforts, such as its Internet.org initiative that provides free Internet access using a mobile app and Web site in parts of Asia, Latin America and Africa. It is also pilot-testing a solar-powered drone to provide Internet access in areas where access is limited, reports CNET.
