Did Serena Williams Blame “Drake Curse?” Predictions for Loss Came True; Pressure Forced World no.1 To Crumble

Serena Williams

As predicted in a previous report, Serena Williams, did indeed lose and it was the upset of the year. The calendar Grand Slam, last achieved in 1988 by Steffi Graf, stands for another year.

There are still some hilarious reactions on Twitter, as they blame rapper Drake, who was rumored to be dating Serena for her loss. It was called the "Drake Curse." Hollywood Life actually took it up and quoted "an insider close to Serena."

"She doesn't blame Drake but would have rather him not have shown up till the finals," their source was quoted.

Drake has recently been vocal about his sports preferences and for the most part, they were solid picks who ended up losing. The Toronto Raptors had a fair chance in the NBA, but they were not favorites. But two of them were overwhelming favorites: The Kentucky Wildcats were 37-0 in the season when they lost in the Final Four, and of course, Serena.

It would not be fair to blame Drake, and analysts have noted that there was something different about Serena.

Grantland: "There was something haywire about her, something a little wild; her celebrations after winning a point were so fierce they verged on unhinged."

USA Today talked to her coach. "Today was not a good day," said Patrick Mouratoglou, who also said Williams woke up feeling off. "Players are humans. How many times did it happen this year where she felt like this and she still found her way through? She didn't find her way today."

Even Serena's opponent saw it: "(In) my mind, I say, 'think about this, she's nervous,'" Vinci said to USA Today. "So I tried to keep fighting for every single point."

A post-mortem from FTW could not help but still add an element of bad luck. "It wasn't for lack of conditioning, it was because the thought of winning that Slam and joining Steffi Graf in the history books was weighing her down," they surmised. "Everything was off. She had overcome a third set 12 times in her 26 Slam matches before Friday, but when the crown was the closest, she couldn't pull out lucky No. 13."
