Chinese Universities Make It to QS Top 200 Rankings

Tsinghua University is one of the most prestigious academic institutions in the country.

Seven universities in mainland China and five in Hong Kong made it to the top 200 of the QS World University Rankings 2015-16.

According to the rankings released on Tuesday, Tsinghua University was the top Chinese university, ranked 25th in the world.

It was accompanied by six other mainland Chinese universities in the top 200, including Peking University at 41st, Fudan University at 51st, Shanghai Jiao Tong University at 70th, Zhejiang University at 110th, University of Science and Technology of China at 113th and Nanjing University at 130th.

The five universities from Hong Kong on the list were Hong Kong University of Science and Technology at 28th, University of Hong Kong at 30th, Chinese University of Hong Kong at 51st, City University of Hong Kong at 57th and Hong Kong Polytechnic University at 116th.

For the fourth consecutive year, Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) ranked first, followed by Harvard. Stanford University and the University of Cambridge tied at third place, and California Institute of Technology in the fifth place.

The top 20 included 10 universities from the United States and five universities from Britain.

The only university in the top 10 that was neither American nor British was ETH Zurich from Switzerland, which placed ninth.

Two Singaporean universities made it to the top 15 for the first time, making the sharpest rise on the list. The two universities were National University of Singapore at 12th and Nanyang Technological University at 13th.

Among the top 200, the countries most represented were the United States with 49 institutions, Britain with 30, the Netherlands with 12 and Germany with 11.
