"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 lead star Ellen Pompeo recently opened up about her character Meredith Grey, her mom Ellis Grey, and how she will cope with Derek Shepherd's (Patrick Dempsey) death.
In an interview with Entertainment Weekly, Pompeo said that Meredith's life will continue to be impacted by Derek's demise. However, this does not mean that she will not survive.
Pompeo reminded her fans that Derek was simply Meredith's other half, but the latter is her own person.
Meanwhile, following Derek's demise, Meredith decided to run away for at least a year, and simply be with her children.
A similar situation happened with Richard decided to leave Meredith's mom Ellis a couple of years ago.
According to Pompeo, Meredith's decision to leave her problem behind does not signify that she did not want history to repeat itself.
"I don't know if you can justify what anyone does in a moment of grief. The most difficult thing we, as humans, go through is the complete loss of someone in our life. There's no telling how you'll react or what you'll do. It's a really extraordinary thing to go through the death, especially of a spouse. I think that people don't judge her too much for that," she said.
In other news, Pompeo said that Meredith has learned so much throughout the past 11 seasons of "Grey's Anatomy." Her biggest learning has to be to never run away from her problems no matter how difficult they could get.
"Grey's Anatomy" season 12 will premiere on ABC on Sept. 24 at 8 p.m. ET.
