Software problems have triggered the recall of 4,156 2014 Jeep Grand Cherokee in China, the General Administration of Quality Supervision, Inspection and Quarantine (AQSIQ) reports.

"The recall involves Grand Cherokee vehicles manufactured from May 10, 2013 to August 20, 2013 and were sold on mainland China," the quality watchdog announced today.

According to the statement released by AQSIQ, the software problem of the 2014 Grand Cherokee has affected the proper working of lighting on the vehicle's dashboard, causing possible safety issues.

Chrysler China will offer software update and free checks on the recalled vehicles.

Last June, the US automaker also recalled a total of 60,700 vehicles exported to China to due various problems. The recall involved 49,750 Chrysler Compass and Patriot vehicles made between October 2009 and July 2012,

Chrysler also recalled 4,783 in the country to due to fuel tank problems last May. The recall involved Compass and Patriot Models between October 2011 and May 2012.

Car manufacturers in China are being closely monitored by AQSIQ for quality. AQSIQ is a department directly under the State Council of China. It is tasked to ensure national quality, conduct inspection of commodities, and perform administrative law enforcement, among others.

Early this month, the quality watchdog announced the recall of 207,700 imported and domestic Tiguan vehicles manufactured by Volkswagen China and Shanghai Volkswagen. The recall was triggered by a faulty fuse in the headlamps of the said vehicles.

Even luxury carmaker Porsche was not spared from the quality check. Last month, Porsche China recalled 218 luxury vehicles in the Chinese mainland due to a software design defect in the panel system.

The defect, said the quality watchdog, means the driver will not be able to accurately read how much fuel has been used. The recall covered Cayenne, Cayenne S Hybrid and Cayenne GTS.
