In Yu Zhengsheng's visit to Kashgar, the top political advisor called for ethnic unity.

Led by top political advisor Yu Zhengsheng, delegates of the central government took a one-day trip to the ancient Silk Road area of Kashgar, days prior the 60th anniversary celebration of the establishment of the Xinjiang Uyghur Autonomous Region.

Already in a festive mood, local officials and residents welcomed the delegates, who will return on Oct. 1 for the commemoration of the said event.

Kashgar serves as the center of the Uyghur civilization. It was also once regarded as a vital hub along the ancient Silk Road.

In a dialogue with local authorities and representatives from different local sectors, Yu made his commitment to maintain the safeguarding of the people's peaceful life in the area. He also vowed to carry on the heavy-handed pressure to combat terrorism.

For the central government, the long-term stability in the region is their main goal for Xinjiang.

Calling for an improved work style among local counterparts, Yu also said that there is a need for a concerted effort to boost the region's local economy, improve the living standards of the residents and increase the employment of the labor force.

Yu also urged the residents and the authorities alike to continue fostering ethnic unity.

During the tour, Yu also lauded the contributions made by religious figures to maintain Xinjiang's social stability. He then stressed that today's "religious figures should [also] be brave enough to declare their stand at critical moments and continue taking a leading role in opposing extremism and promoting unity of various ethnic groups."

In the afternoon, the central government delegates also took a trip to the military area of southern Xinjiang. Yu then urged the military force to enhance their capacities to ensure lasting peace in the autonomous region.
