Chinese Vice-President Li Yuanchao, State Councilor Yang Jiechi and  US Deputy Secretary of State William Burns have agreed that improved trust and the continued development of China-U.S. relations are key to the two countries' ability to address new and vital challenges that lay ahead.

The three officials conferred in separate meetings in Beijing on Wednesday.

In his meeting with Burns, Li noted that with US-China diplomatic relations now on its 35th year, the two countries must execute important agreements between their respective presidents and stay focused on the path that would build better relations between the two great world powers.

Li called on the two nations to develop better cooperation, diplomatically settle differences and critical issues, promote mutual cooperation on different levels and areas and work on the continued development and improvement of China-U.S. relations.

For his part, Burns said that favorable relations between China and the U.S. have an impact not only on the two countries but on the whole world as a whole. Burns also emphasized that the U.S. is committed to promoting favorable cooperation with China in different fields and to establishing enhanced relations between the two major world powers.

In his own meeting with Burns, Yang called for improved trust and cooperation, judicious resolution of disparities and the further development in relations given the new and vital challenges that both countries are facing this year. Burns said that his country likewise seeks to bolster communication, mutual cooperation and promote improved relations between the two countries.

China is the second nation that Burns visited in his three-nation tour. He arrived in Beijing from the Republic of Korea on Tuesday and will depart for Japan on Thursday.
