Lin Qiming, a convicted murderer on parole used a statue of Buddha to kill his friend, Mr. Chen. The attack stemmed from an argument which occurred while the two were drinking at Mr. Chen's residence. After smashing Chen with the statue Mr. Lin took off down the nearest set of stairs in order to avoid the surveillance cameras in the elevator.

Afterwards Lin lied to police saying that he was chasing after the elevator, not avoiding the cameras. Another friend of Lin testified that he had never seen Lin take the stairs from that residence. The highest court has recently convicted Mr. Lin of murder and have sentenced him to life without parole.

In 1992 Lin Qiming began a 15 year sentece for a previous murder. In March of 2005 he was released on parole. While drinking at a friend's house in New Taipei City the two started arguing, which prompted Mr. Lin to pick up a nearby crystal statue of Buddha and repeatedly smash his friend in the head until he lie in a pool of blood.

According to court records there were signs of struggle at the scene. The likeness of Buddha was cracked as was an ottoman. As Mr. Chen's skull was smashed to pieces police gathered that the assailant hit him repeatedly with force. Mr. Lin's friend stated that Lin normally took the elevator, but this time took the stairs, indicating to police that he was trying to avoid surveillance cameras. Lin has been on the run since and is now a fugitive of the law. He has contacted his older brother by phone and admitted to the killing.
