March 18th, the United States Ambassador to China Max Baucus held a press conference at the US Embassy in Beijing. Max Baucus gave a brief speech during the press conference.

Baucus recalls his relationship with China. He has visited China for at least eight times and once hosted trade delegations from China. Baucus says he loves travelling. So he used to travel in different places in China.

Then, Ambassador Max Baucus talks about his three goals during his first period as the United States Ambassador to China.

First of all, Baucus will work hard to strengthen the economic relationship with China in a way that is mutually beneficial and ensure a level playing field for American businesses and workers to compete fairly with their Chinese counterparts. Secondly, Baucus hopes China and the United States should strengthen the coordination and cooperation in international and regional affairs, jointly cope with the global challenges and maintain the world peace and stability. Thirdly, Baucus says both countries should strengthen people-to-people diplomacy, including studying abroad and travelling.

The 72-year-old ambassador used to be a senator of the United States for 38 years. Now, he replaces Gary Lock as new ambassador to China.
