According to International Business Times, a close friend of Captain Zaharie Ahmad Shah told reporters that Shah, the pilot of Flight MH370, was "terribly upset" about his failing marriage. The anonymous close friend, who is also a pilot, said that Zaharie Ahmad Shah was in no state of mind to be flying. Zaharie Ahmad Shah once hinted darkly that MH370 might be his last joyride.

The close friend said Zaharie Ahmad Shah's wife has decided to leave him and took his children away from him, which made Zaharie Ahmad Shah feel upset and angry. As a result, Zaharie Ahmad Shah was in no state of mind to be flying.

It is estimated that the plane spent 23 minutes at 45000 feet, which is far above its maximum altitude, and rendered all passengers unconscious from the lack of oxygen. Oxygen would have run out in 12 minutes in a depressurized cabin of an aircraft, rendering the passengers unconscious. However, pilot Zaharie Ahmad Shah could use the separate systems of oxygen supply and kept navigating the plane until it ran out of oil.
