The government of China has agreed to sponsor food commodities in three African countries hit by Ebola, said Commerce Minister Gao Hucheng.

According to the United Nations World Food Program (WFP), China will issue $6 million to the program to provide food for victims in Sierra Leone, Liberia and Guinea.

WFP has estimated that about a million people in the three countries will face food shortage in the coming months.

The food aid will serve as the third form of assistance China is extending to Africa.

In September, the country sent a batch of 59 medical workers to Sierra Leone to aid in containing the epidemic. A second batch of 100 medical experts has also been dispatched to Liberia this month.

The Ebola outbreak was officially announced on March 25, 2014. WHO calls the disease "severe, often fatal illness in humans," with infection mainly caused by human-to-human transmissions. Recent data put the death toll to a total of 4,000.
