China has close to 60,000 centenarians, the oldest one being 128 years old, revealed a report by the Gerontological Society of China on Tuesday.

The total number of people aged 100 and above has reached 58,789. About three quarters of them are women and most are living in the countryside, the report said.

The provinces of Hainan, Guangxi and Anhui have the most centenarians. These places are known for their good environment and their economy is "moderately developed."

The society also found that most of those in this age group engage in outdoor activities, are willing to strike a conversation with others and maintain a healthy diet.

The island province of Hainan was declared as a "Word Longevity Island" by the International Expert Committee on Population Aging and Longevity (ISCPAL), according to a September report by Shanghai Daily.

Hainan holds the record of being home to 1,900 centenarians and about 1.2 million residents above age 60 by the end of 2013. The total number of long-living people in the province comprises 13.36 percent of its total population, according to the provincial committee on aging.

Hainan has high-quality air and water, contributing hugely to the longevity of its residents. The study by ISCPAL also showed that the hair of the province's centenarians has abundant health-promoting trace elements.

Meanwhile, China at large had over 202 million people above the age of 60 by the end of 2013. The number makes up 15 percent of the country's population.
