Officials from the industry advised Chinese companies to prepare for the upcoming batch of new Internet domain names by improving brand awareness.

In the next two years, the ".app" and ".game" domain names will be released. According to Brandma.com chief executive and founder Chiao Ching, firms should start making preparations for the complex application and verification procedures for the domain names.

Chiao founded the domain name management company based in Beijing. Brandma.com's clients include several of China's top-100 brands.

The chief executive said that the upcoming release marks a new generation for Internet domain names, and it also opens up opportunities for firms in China to boost their brand awareness after foreign companies took over the ".com" generation.

Chinese companies, including those in the fast-rising mobile Internet and video gaming sectors, will greatly benefit from a top-level Internet domain name as it will significantly help develop their branding to fuel overseas expansion.

The new batch of online domain names includes city-specific names such as ".paris," ".nyc" and ".stockholm," according to senior vice president Roland Laplante of Afilias, a leading Internet domain name services website.

The new domain extensions were authorized in 2012 by the Internet Corporation for Assigned Names and Numbers (ICANN), the top authority in regulations for domain names.

Around 2,000 new domain name extensions will be made available in the coming years, including company-specific extensions such as ".google" and general extensions like ".food," ".bar" and ".photo."
