The Beijing municipal committee of the Communist Party of China (CPC) and the Beijing municipal government issued a letter thanking the Chinese capital's citizens for their support during the recently concluded Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation (APEC) week.

"This event is the largest and the highest-profile international activity held in China since the 2008 Olympics," the letter read. The parts that the citizens did to make the meetings among world leaders successful were widely recognized, it continued.

"Sincere gratitude and highest respect" were conveyed by the letter to the citizens of Beijing, who made "unselfish contributions" to the major international event, according to a People Daily report.

The letter was posted on the Beijing municipal government's official website and published on Wednesday by local newspapers, including the Beijing Daily and The Beijing Morning Post.

Leaders of the APEC's member countries attended the summit, which started on Nov. 5 and closed on Nov. 11, Tuesday.

The central government and the local government in Beijing put in place several measures to ensure peaceful and smooth proceedings during the weeklong event.

Government employees were given holidays during the summit and traffic restrictions were implemented to avoid congestions in the city's areas where the summit was held.

Factory operations were also temporarily shut down to reduce the notorious air pollution in the capital, while security efforts were made with the help of thousands of civilian volunteers.
