The recent news that Matthew McConaughey turned down a major role in Marvel Studios' "Guardians of the Galaxy 2" has started a buzz. The report from Variety.
"Marvel and Gunn wanted Matthew McConaughey to play the villain in the superhero sequel, but the actor recently passed, leaving the search for that part still in progress. Sources say that decision should be made in the coming weeks, as production is expected to begin in early 2016."
Now the big question is "who is the villain in the superhero sequel?" One clue is that it must be an important character to merit a Matthew McConaughey casting. Considering that director James Gunn had up and coming actors (Chris Pratt was nowhere as popular as he is now prior to his Star Lord casting), taking a turn at a Hollywood A-lister means the role is for keeps.
According to speculation from Coming Soon, that role may have been Adam Warlock. While Warlock in the comic books was a major player to overcome Thanos, he started off as a villainous alien cult leader by the name of Magus. CS explains:
"In the comics when Warlock gained possession of the Soul Gem, he eventually dealt with a future version of himself known as Magus. Did I mention Magus is evil?"
McConaughey could first appear as Magus, the villain before he re-incarnates into Adam Warlock. The challenge of shifting allegiances might be the reason why Marvel is going for a more proven actor, not to mention the significance of the role moving forward.
Following the assumption that McConaughey did turn down the Adam Warlock role, the new question is-who will Marvel take next?
