The Chinese government is currently helping Nigeria maintain its campaign against the Ebola virus, which the country said it has already defeated.

According to the Global Times, China has stepped up its efforts to help countries struck by the Ebola virus.

In particular, China has given additional assistance to Nigeria, which reportedly made a breakthrough and overcome the deadly virus. The Chinese government donated $1.6 million worth of materials and financial aid to make sure Nigeria stays virus-free.

The said resources from China included body scanners, thermometers as well as personal protective gear that could help the people on the ground assist the infected while avoiding contracting the virus themselves.

The materials were given Monday by Chinese Ambassador to Nigeria Gu Xiaojie to Nigeria's Minister of State for Health Khliru Alhassan. Other officials of the ministry were also present during the event.

Alhassan expressed his gratitude to the Chinese government for its strong support in West Africa's battle against Ebola. The minister also assured that both the Nigerian and Chinese governments will continue to cooperate in the future.

Rui Gama Vaz, Nigeria's representative to the World Health Organization, said in a recent statement: "The virus is gone for now. The outbreak in Nigeria has been defeated."

Gama Vaz added that it is too early to celebrate. "This is a spectacular success story that shows to the world Ebola can be contained, but we must be clear that we have only won a battle. The war will only end when West Africa is declared free of Ebola," the representative added.
