Civil Servants Named Most Likely to Be Single

Several thousand Chinese citizens still apply to be civil servants every year, despite the relatively low salary.

New data shows that civil servants are the most likely out of any profession to be single, according to the matchmaking website Guanggun Net, also known as Singles Net.

The dating website released a report on Wednesday, Oct. 28, listing 11 jobs in which people are likely to be single. At the top spot were those in the civil service profession, which the site considers a sign that the once-revered position is no longer as respected as in the past.

Most civil servants have relatively low pay, making it difficult to purchase a home, a requirement for most people in China to consider someone marriage material.

On the other hand, senior officials risk becoming the victim of the government's anti-corruption campaign.

Next on the list were couriers, a job often held by young men who have migrated from rural areas to the cities. They are usually busy, especially during the holidays, due to the booming e-commerce industry, making it difficult to enter into a relationship.

Number three on the list were flight attendants, citing time spent away from home as the reason they find it hard to keep a relationship. However, because flight attendants are usually hired in part for their physical appeal, they rarely remain single.

Writers and poets placed fifth on the website's list. It has become rare for a person to be able to make a living out of their written works alone, which becomes even worse when they need to provide for a family.

Other professions mentioned by the website as the most single include actors, journalists, artists, doctors, programmers, migrant workers and cooks.
