Twitter users can now privately share a tweet via the direct message (DM) feature of the micro-blogging social media site.

The feature will be available on both the TweetDeck app and the desktop version. It can be seen under the "...More" icon where an option to "Share via Direct Message" can be clicked. On both the Android and iOS versions of the app, the option will appear if the user long-presses a tweet.

The recipient of the shared tweet will be notified by a push notification. The shared tweet will also appear in the direct message.

Even if the feature is not highly demanded by the users, it is still useful for those who choose to interact privately.

In the mobile Internet industry, more online firms and services are leaping on the trend of offering users additional ways to communicate privately. Twitter is also adapting to the trend by adding more functionalities to its direct messaging feature.

Besides the recent update on the sharing of links, photos can now also be included in the DM feature since winter of 2013. Additionally, there have been minor updates for the DM feature such as the "recents" list and new icons.

"Twitter is already a great place for public conversation; now it's also easier to privately discuss things you care about," a blog post from Twitter said, which refers to the new tweet sharing option in its DM feature.

The feature was recently announced on its Analyst's Day event earlier this month. Other features such as the capability to upload and edit longer videos, and new timeline additions were announced during the event.

To date, Twitter has more than 280 million monthly active users, while around 500 million Web users visit the micro-blogging site.
