The Pudong government and Pudong Public Transport firm join hands to lure younger drivers.

The Pudong New Area government in Shanghai announced on the weekend that an extensive length of Pudong Avenue will be closed to traffic for five years starting Saturday, Nov. 22.

This is to give way to the construction of a 7.9-kilometer triple-decker road and a Metro project, said a statement posted on the government's microblog, according to Shanghai Daily.

The part that will be affected is the stretch between Pudong Road S. and Xiepu Road, the statement said.

Two lanes, with a width of five meters each, will remain usable during the construction period in order to provide way for office workers and residents.

The government posted on its blog the diversion roads motorists can use while construction is ongoing, adding that bus lines will will need to make adjustments in their routes.

The construction on the avenue will include a stretch of the planned 40-kilometer Metro Line 14, as well as a 6.1-kilometer tunnel and a road connecting the exit of Yan'an Road E. Tunnel and Jinqiao Road.

The road, which will have an expanse of six to eight lanes, will extend from Century Avenue and Lujiazui Road.

Also, the planned tunnel will have four lanes.

Construction along Pudong Avenue is expected to be finished by Sept. 2019.
