J.J. Abrams has opened up about the upcoming "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" having a standalone beginning and end as the 49-year-old talked about Lucas' "Star Wars" franchise.
In an interview for the next issue of WIRED magazine, the "Star Trek" director talked about the goal of "Star Wars: The Force Awakens."
"We wanted to tell a story that had its own self-contained beginning, middle and end," Abrams explained. Likewise, the sci-fi producer acknowledged how the team has been able to naturally utilize the elements of the "Star Wars" series because no backstory or reboot was necessary.
However, Abrams clarified that the new "Star Wars" movie will not be entirely dependent to the past installments. "The Force Awakens" will be introducing new characters placed in new dilemmas, according to Hollywood Reporter.
For Abrams, having a new set of characters will hopefully allow even people who are not familiar with the sci-fi franchise to enjoy "The Force Awakens."
In addition, the writer and actor remarked how "Star Wars Episode IV: A New Hope" was a great film that not only had a defined story from start to end but also implied a rich history and left room for future events to unfold, according to Tech Times.
The Bad Robot Productions founder said that George Lucas was able to identify and implement the correct story elements to create a complex, beautiful world that was beyond what was popular back when "A New Hope" was released.
The "Force Awakens" director wants the forthcoming "Star Wars" film to have a story that completely resolves without closing the doors for a continuation and does not simply aim to sell toy figures based on the franchise.
Abrams also told WIRED magazine that the director wanted to handle a movie that the 49-year-old composer is entirely familiar about.
Even if Abrams felt good about directing "Super 8" and "Star Trek Into Darkness," both those films apparently had "fundamental story problems" which did not get polished in the end.
The long-awaited new installment to the franchise, "Star Wars: The Force Awakens" comes out on Dec. 18.
