The Blu-ray disc format may once again see a resurgence as Sony Pictures Home Entertainment recently announced that it will soon release Ultra HD contents via disc format.

This announcement makes Sony the second studio, following Twentieth Century Fox Home Entertainment, to reveal its plans about releasing Ultra HD contents on Blu-ray disc.

Sony said that the first batch of releases will arrive sometime in early 2016 and will include the following films; "The Smurfs 2," "Pineapple Express," "Chappie," "Hancock," "Salt," and "The Amazing Spider-Man 2." Sony added that its library will soon grow to include favorite TV shows as well as newly released films.

The 4K Ultra HD video format is slowly gaining traction in the mainstream media. Although most of its content are currently available in digital format, it is still getting significant attention due to its vibrant colors, great contrast and brilliant highlights. According to Engadget, Ultra HD content from Sony will support high dynamic range as well as next-generation audio formats.

Sony Pictures Home Entertainment president Man Jit Singh told Variety, "By some estimates, consumers will own over 100 million Ultra HD television sets by 2019. Sony Pictures' 4K Ultra HD Discs will deliver consumers the ultimate home theater experience, with stunning picture and sound quality."

Since most Ultra HD contents are available in digital format, they can be easily accessed through online video streaming services. Playing Ultra HD contents from a Blu-ray disc will require a Blu-ray disc play and an Ultra HD TV.

Samsung announced at 2015 IFA Berlin that it is planning to release the world's first ever Ultra HD Blu-ray player sometime in 2016.
