Minneapolis will soon take the top spot for the fastest Internet speed in the world, beating New York, Tokyo and Zurich.

Minnesota-based US Internet will be providing the Internet service with a speed of 10 gigabits per second or 10,000 megabits.

Downloading a full-length movie at the speed will take no more than a second. However, only around 30,000 Minneapolis residents will have access to the world's fastest Internet speed.

US Internet has already installed several fiber lines in a small area in the Minneapolis.

Co-CEO of US Internet Joe Caldwell said that the high-speed Internet is not for "everyone" as it is aimed for offices and businesses.

The 10 gigabit service costs around $399 per month, while the one gigabit costs about $65.

According to Caldwell, the United States' average Internet speed is around 30 megabits, which takes the 40th spot in the world.

Describing the significant change in the Internet speed, Caldwell compared it to shifting from "30 to 10,000 miles per hour." The Internet service provider has been delivering its service to Minneapolis for six years already.

US Internet is planning to install fiber lines for the high-speed Internet service at the whole I-494/I-694 corridor of the Twin Cities, but the installation is expected to take at least five years.

Andrew Johnson, a member of the Minneapolis City Council, said that they cannot "imagine" the potential technological applications the high-speed internet may open for the city.

On Tuesday, residents located east of 35W will have the chance to experience the world's fastest Internet speed. Minneapolis will soon be surpassing Internet speeds of Los Angeles, Kansas and New York City nationally, while it will beat Zurich, Tokyo and Hong Kong globally.
