Why Won’t Canelo Fight Golovkin At 160 lbs? GGG Has Allegedly Beaten Canelo In 2011 Sparring

Canelo Alvarez vs Miguel Cotto

Saul "Canelo" Alvarez is now the WBC middleweight champion, but he does not want to fight at that actual weight class.

The Mexican champion has been accused of trying to create his own weight class at 155 lbs-which he claims to be his "natural weight."

Unfortunately for him, the WBC has a deadline set for him to negotiate with Golovkin. According to Boxing News 24, there is a 15-day deadline for the new champion to talk with the mandatory challenger in this case, that's Triple G.

It is still undetermined on whether the champion can actually demand a catch weight on a mandatory challenger. There is a chance that the WBC might strip Canelo of his belt.

But the Mexican fighter has been firm in his demand both before and after winning over Miguel Cotto. He explained his reason to Fight Hype.

"At this moment, my body isn't ready for 160 pounds. Maybe 1 or 2 more years I'll be ready for 160, I don't know, but I'd be delighted to fight someone like Gennady. He's a great fighter and I think it would be a great fight. I'd be delighted to get him in a fight."

Most boxing critics do not believe this since Alvarez has been known to rehydrate after the weigh in up to 175 lbs. This is also a skill developed in boxing-which Golovkin has not developed. The Kazakh fighter has yet to fight below 158 lbs, according to Bloody Elbow.

However, it can also be contended that Golovkin once declared that he is ready to fight at 154 lbs against Floyd Mayweather, Jr. Why would he not do it for Canelo?

Both boxers do not want to give any undue advantage to each other. The mutual respect is probably because they have met each other in a sparring session in 2011. As recalled by Ring TV, Golovkin had the advantage over the much younger Alvarez (only 21), but he actually held his own. There was no clear winner, and of course, it was more of "work, not war."

The sparring session lasted 6 four-minute rounds. Golovkin's trainer, Abel Sanchez mentioned that "We're using 'Canelo' for his speed, He's using us for our size."
