Sony's PlayStation 4 has stood its ground and bested its closest nemesis in terms of units sold and overall market share despite experiencing multiple attacks which toppled its online services during the holidays.
The past year has indeed been a good year for gamers. This year saw the release of three of the biggest consoles on the market. The year also witnessed various groundbreaking games, flops and controversies. With all the numbers settling in only one name game on top and that is PlayStation 4.
Microsoft only managed to close in the gap during the last few months of the year when they decided to cut off its consoles price and introduced a bundled service together with some highly anticipated games. The fact that Microsoft is willing to drop its prices in order to compete with the PlayStation means that they are serious in taking the console war right into Sony's doorsteps.
Sony's strategy, however, is completely novel and at the same time ingenious. Instead of focusing on marketing its console, Sony decided to put most of its effort in acquiring top-rated and highly valuable titles. However, most tech experts say that the lagging sales of the Xbox One were brought about by the lackluster presentation Microsoft made on 2014 E3. It was a appalling presentation and perhaps it made mark on consumers that the Xbox One is not poised to become the biggest console of the year.
Nintendo's Wii on the other hand is steadily and probably comfortable in the third spot behind the two console giants. Nintendo has not shifted its focus and has continued to supply its fan base with its beloved titles. However, Nintendo's saving grace came in the form of "Super Smash Bros." and "Mario Kart 8." These two titles were release just on the neck of time, when Nintendo's sales were severely worsening.
Making their way into the New Year, the three competing giants have all promised their consumers that 2015 will be a hard fought year in terms of console domination.
