BlackBerry is slowly reaching out to the smart wearable scene as it announced that it will be pushing its BBM messaging app to Google's Android Wear in "early 2015."
The Canadian smartphone firm made its announcement on the company blog during the 2015 Consumer Electronics Show. It also posted a tweet from its official account with the hashtags #BlackBerry and #wearables. The announcements follow BlackBerry's BBM expansion to the Android and iOS mobile platforms in October 2013. As of September 2014, it has amassed about 90 million monthly active users with registered users at about 140 million.
According to Tech Crunch, the BBM for Android Wear will feature new message alerts, message previews, Google Now integration and preset messages.
Android Wear BBM will let users accept or ignore invites easily, Fortune reported.
BlackBerry said that its Android Wear BBM app will be compatible with "a wide variety" of smartwatches by Google's wearable OS, which supports Samsung Gear Live, Motorola Moto 360 and the LG G Watch among others. Android Wear integrates smartphones with their wearable counterparts, which enables users to view and respond to smartphone notifications right from their wrists.
However, the Ontario-based tech firm is still falling behind its profits.
BlackBerry, which pioneered smartphones, reported that is still struggling to keep its revenues and shares up. According to Reuters, the firm's revenue declined from $1.19 billion in 2013 down to 2014's $793 million. In addition, its NASDAQ shares also declined by 5.6 percent. It also reported a 28 cents per share loss, amounting to $148 million during the third quarter of 2014
