A massive superflare was observed by scientists from a star in the Milky Way, similar to our Sun. This could be similar to the stellar behavior with our Sun that it could also produce massive superflare, according to scientists.
This massive solar flash that the Sun could also produce is destructive to life on Earth.
According to a research paper, written by a group of scientists that was published in The Astrophysical Journal, the star KIC9655129 has solar flares similar to that of the Sun, Christian Science Monitor reported.
This scientific features of solar flares then could be similar to the Sun, capable of producing massive blasts like the Milky Way star that had been observed.
This solar flares could produce energy which is equivalent to 100 million megaton bombs and a superflare that could release an energy equivalent to 100 billion megaton bombs, the report added.
The paper's lead author Chloë Pugh explained that the superflare, once the Sun releases, would be disastrous for the Earth. Pugh continued that their "GPS and radio communication systems could be severely disrupted and there could be large scale power blackouts," wherein these blackouts are results of strong electrical currents.
Pugh said that based on previous study and observation of the Sun's activity, the conditions as required for a superflare are unlikely to happen.
The solar system is filled with ionised gas or plasma from the Sun. This is from the Sun's solar wind and other solar eruptions, Pugh added.
Stars like the Sun, as Pugh explained, produce massive superflares, Newsmax.com reported.
The lead author added that there is a need to determine Sun-liked stars' physical processes responsible for both the solar flares and the superflares so that a study could further explain whether the Sun could also release catastrophic superflares or not, the report added.
