A landslide struck the Hengtaiyu industrial park in Shenzhen, Guangdong Province, on Sunday, Dec. 20, burying 33 buildings and leaving more than 100,000 square meters of debris at the site. As of Monday, at least 91 people are still missing.
According to the Ministry of Land and Resources, the landslide was caused by the accumulation of huge pile of soil and not by a natural cause. The area is a dump site for soil and construction wastes.
The Chinese cabinet has sent groups to coordinate rescue efforts in the disaster site. But due to unfavorable conditions like mud, rain and low nighttime visibility, rescue operations are taking much longer.
