Ish Smith

An actual trade was executed in the NBA when Ish Smith of the New Orleans Pelicans was sent to the Philadelphia 76ers.

The Smith was sent in exchange for the two second round picks (the Sixers own and the Denver Nuggets') and the Sixers also waived Tony Wroten to accommodate a roster spot.

From the Real GM forum, speculation mentioned that this move was probably not made by Sixers GM Sam Hinkie, as he would rather keep the picks. The move was also criticized because Smith is an unrestricted free agent at the end of the season.

Apparently, this was a move that was endorsed by new associate coach Mike D'Antoni. According to Times Picayune, the former coach of the Lakers, Knicks and Suns is impressed with the point guard.

"Sources say newly hired Philadelphia 76ers lead assistant Mike D'Antoni is impressed with Smith's abilities and wanted to get him on their roster," TP's John Reid. "Also, sources say the Pelicans weren't going to be able to extend adequate minutes to Smith in the rotation with Norris Cole back after missing the first 17 games of the season with a high ankle sprain."

While it seems like a good move as Smith performed well when he was given the opportunity with the Pelicans. However, as Norris Cole returning and Jrue Holiday's minutes increasing, he might not have playing time.

The two second rounders project to be early ones, from the 30-37 range as both the Sixers and Nuggets are at the bottom tier of the league. It is presumed that this is a way to manifest Jerry Colangelo's presence to address the immediate needs of the team at point guard.
