In a bizarre tale of murder and suicide, a 72-year-old man killed his 71-year-old wife, cut her head and cemented it, and used the concrete block as deadweight to drown himself.

His corpse and the concrete block tied to the man's hand, were found on Monday in an Austrian lake, the Traunsee, reports the New York Daily News. The man first choked his wife and cut off her body parts, according to police official Gottfried Mitterlehner.

On Sunday, two suitcases - which contained the wife's dismembered body - were spotted floating close to the lake shore near Gmunden, 80 kilometers east of Salzburg. Police divers recovered the man's body and the concrete block, placed inside a bag, in Traunsee.

Because the man's body showed no signs of struggle, the man's death is considered an extended suicide, Brigit Ahamar, prosecutor of Wels, a nearby town, says at a news conference, reports the Sydney Morning Herald.

According to The Blaze, the man was a native Austrian, while his wife was a German.

Lake Traunsee is known for its flat water and generally light wind. It was the venue for the Austria Cup held from May 27 to 31, 2015, the third time that the picturesque resort served as venue and host to the GC32s boat race. The lake is found at the heart of the Salzkammergut mountains in Austria.
