Two of the Chinese hopefuls in the women's draw of the 2016 Australian Open have ended their campaign at Melbourne Park after losing in the second round of the tournament.
After an impressive win over Mariana Duque of Colombia, Han Xinyun struggled to find her rhythm against Kazakhstan's Yulia Putintseva, who defeated the Chinese 6-3 6-1.
Putintseva appeared too much for Han as the Kazakh carried her strong momentum from defeating former world No. 1 Caroline Wozniacki in their first round matchup.
Wozniacki's embarrassing exit marked her first defeat in the opening round of this year's Australian Open at Melbourne Park.
"I would say it's a pretty (rubbish) start to the season. It wasn't a pretty first set but I got it done and really should have closed it off in two," Wozniacki said, reports Yahoo Sports AU.
"You know, I let her back into the match, and it was basically my own fault that I'm not here as the winner."
Putintseva will have a third round showdown with Russia's Margarita Gasparyan, who advanced in the second round after dismissing Japan's Kurumi Nara 6-4 6-4.
Another Chinese player who had an unfortunate bid at the Aussie Open is Wang Qiang, who stunned American Sloane Stephens in the first round 6-3 6-3.
Wang was one of the many players who staged in upset in the early rounds of the tournament, but her momentum did not carry into her match against Anna-Lena Friedsam of Germany, losing 6-3 6-4.
But despite the loss, Wang believes her stint at Melbourne Park will be helpful in the upcoming tournaments she will join.
"First match I beat big seed. For me this is very helpful for the rest of the season," Wang said, reports the Shanghai Daily.
The only remaining Chinese players in the tournament is Zheng Saisai and Zhang Shuai, who have a second round matchup against Johanna Konta and Alize Cornet, respectively.
