With seven films in the "Fast & Furious" franchise already smashing box office records and the eighth one in production, neither Universal Pictures nor the series veteran Vin Diesel are showing any sign of slowing down. Recently, Diesel revealed that the "Fast & Furious" franchise would end with a trilogy and announced the release dates of the three upcoming films.
According to The Verge, while Universal will be releasing "Fast 8," the eighth installment of "Fast & Furious" franchise, sometime in April 2017, Diesel announced on Tuesday that there would be two more films of the series, taking the total number of installments to 10. According to Diesel, while "Fast 8" will hit theaters on April 14, 2017, the next two untitled films of the series - "Fast 9" and "Fast 10" - will release in 2019 and 2021 respectively.
Diesel posted the information regarding the premiere dates of the three upcoming "Fast & Furious" movies on Instagram. Referring to his character Dominic Toretto in the franchise, the actor wrote "Happy Toretto Tuesday," adding, "The studio has asked me to release some very big Fast news ... Give me a minute though, for I am still in that Xander state of mind."
According to Digital Trends, the announcement from Diesel included the tagline "2 Decades, 10 Films, 1 Saga" - an indication to the fact that the first film of the blockbuster juggernaut was released in 2001, while the tenth installment is scheduled for release in 2021.
While "Straight Outta" director F. Gary Gary will be at the helm of "Fast 8," Diesel has hinted that the upcoming movie will be the first of a trilogy following the unfortunate demise of another franchise veteran in a car accident last year. In fact, the cast rendered an emotional sendoff to their departed colleague in "Furious 7," which was released last year.
According to Diesel, the "Fast and Furious" producers are eager to continue with the hugely popular series as long as people loved it.
Meanwhile, rumors are doing the rounds that Eva Mendes, who appeared in the 2003 film "2 Fast 2 Furious," second installment of the franchise, is being considered for "Fast 8."
