While spring 2016 is almost here, not a single MacBook runs on Intel's latest processor architecture. As a result, model upgrades are looming.
Top tier Windows dealers like HP and Microsoft have moved to the Skylake 6th Generation Intel Core Processor - the latest microarchitecture that follows Haswell/Broadwell. However, Apple is yet to make such a move since most MacBooks currently run on Broadwell, which is a die shrink of Haswell.
The new Intel microarchitecture brings many improvements and it appears as if Intel has been concentrating on battery life and graphic silicon performance advancements in the past few years. Skylake processor puts these aspects into consideration as well.
Here are purchase timing recommended according to projections of upcoming upgrades and versions.
15-inch MacBook Pro Retina
Fans should wait to purchase the laptop since it due anytime from March. There have been no update schedules for the MacBook Pro Retina in the past two years because of Intel processor delays, according to Buyer Guide MacRumors. The 15-inch laptop was updated last internally in May 2015 but it still runs on Haswell (circa 2013) processors, which points to a possible processor update.
Making a shift from Haswell to Skylake is a big upgrade. Any physical redesign would be great, keeping in mind that both the 13-inch and 15-inch MBP Retina have had the same design since 2012.
13-inch MacBook Pro Retina
The laptop is also due anytime in March but users should wait. However, the Broadwell 13-inch MacBook is receiving heavy discounts, which would not be bad to buy since it still has good review based on its battery life and a strong Retina display. Since it has been a year since the laptop was updated, fans should expect seeing a Skylake version soon.
13-inch MacBook Air
The MacBook Air has not received any physical makeover since 2010, in addition to the low-resolution displays. Although the current Broadwell MacBook Air continues to get positive reviews based on the long battery life, fans should wait for the looming changes beyond just the processor. In fact, rumors have it that Apple is phasing out the Air brand.
12-inch MacBook with Retina Display
According to Forbes, fans should wait with exceptions given the laptop is getting heavy discounts lately. While a 12-inch MacBook with a Broadwell processor will not be any different in terms of performance or battery life from the upcoming Skylake version, changes are possible this spring, including an updated UBS-C port. However, the current Broadwell 12-inch MacBook will not be bad if buyers can get it for $300 off the regular price.
