Twitter is rolling out two major updates in hopes of reinvigorating its status as one of the biggest social network in the world. The new updates include the new private group messaging feature and the much anticipated video support.
Twitter's goal is to provide an easier service for its users and at the same time provide a more appealing website to attract more users and to get its current users engage in the website more frequently, according to The USA Today.
Twitter now features a direct group messaging service which allows group conversation of up to 20 users, TechTimes reported. Additionally, the new service allows private forums and discussions between users even if they are not following each other.
The update also rolls out one of the most requested service on Twitter, the video support feature.
Twitter users can now add videos of up to 30 seconds on their tweets. However, the video support feature is only available on the desktop and iPhone version of Twitter but the company promised that it will be releasing the feature to Android users very soon.
Twitter product director Jinen Kamdar said, "We think by arming all these people with video, we are going to get some really rich and engaging content in the network every day that users are going to love."
The new update also introduced the "while you were away" feature. The new feature gives out notifications about important tweets that were posted when a user went offline.
With these new added features many tech analysts believe that Twitter might be remodeling its service to closely resemble that of Facebook.
Facebook still holds the top spot on the social network ladder with close to 1.3 billion registered users. Twitter on the other hand is in a close battle with photo-sharing app Instagram to control the second spot.
As of December 2014, Twitter has 284 million active users while Instagram has close to 300 million users.
