David Beckham attacked by Rio de Janeiro slum dwellers since the ex-football reportedly player bought a shack in the area and now it has been invaded by foreigners, Daily Mail reported.
Beckham reportedly bought the shack with a view of the beach for £250,000 or $378,637. After his purchase, the area sold nearby houses for hefty prices and it became a luxury for foreign dwellers. The houses are reportedly being sold for £400,000 or $606,086 from its original price of £2,500 or $3788.
Although the rumor about Beckham purchasing a house in Vidigal favela was never confirmed, residents put the blame on him for the emerging tourists in the slum. The house is reportedly colonial-themed located at the end of Road 3 lined with trees.
The residence is reportedly hidden by a green wall and a huge wooden garage door. The location is overlooking the Atlantic Ocean. Beckham has been spotted several times in Rio during the World Cup in 2014.
Most buyers of the marketed shacks are foreigners including a French woman named Leatitia Lafayete who transferred to the area after she married Brazilian Lucas Tavares. Lafayete said that she resigned from her interior architecture job in Paris to find a soul mate on Brazil.
When she realized that she would never get married unless she takes a risk, she decided to go to Brazil since she admires the men in country. Lafayete met her 27-year-old husband on her second day in Brazil.
The couple has turned their home in Vidigal into a mini hotel and restaurant since they believe that the site will attract more tourists in the near future. However, Lafayete complained that one disadvantage of living in the area is the "ignorant" neighborhood.
The French lady said that the residents are "uneducated" and they blast loud music all the time. There are no "rules" for them. Lafayete added that she has difficulty in communicating with the residents since they are unprofessional and "lazy" and she described the living situation similar to Africa.
On the other hand, local residents complained that the foreigners are also "lazy" and they wake up at "lunchtime." The locals added that most of the tourists think they are the owners of the area when it is originally their property. In addition, the prices of food and other basic necessities have increased due to Beckham's rumored arrival in the slums, Sports Mole reported.
Amidst the ongoing controversy, Beckham's representative confirmed that the athlete never bought nor inquired a certain house in Vidigal.
