"The Vampire Diaries" star Ian Somerhalder reportedly changed his mind regarding Nina Dobrev's involvement in The CW series.
Just recently, the actor talked about the upcoming eighth season of "The Vampire Diaries," and said that he's hopeful the show could focus more on its core characters.
It is common knowledge among fans that "The Vampire Diaries" is centered on three characters, namely, Elena Gilbert and Damon and Stefan Salvatore.
Dobrev previously gave life to the character of Elena for the past six seasons, and Somerhalder is now looking forward to seeing his ex-girlfriend on the show once again.
While speaking with E! News, Somerhalder said, "The reason I'm not reflecting going back is that I'm staring down the barrel of another season and I really want to make sure that we get to go back to the basics. What made people fall in love with this story was its characters, not 40 of them, like eight of them, six of them - this core group of actors, of characters that really move you."
"We don't know where that's going to go but leaving the audience with the fact that by the time they will have spent eight years of their life with these people, I wanted the audience to feel closer, more afraid, more in love, more in tune with these characters than they have ever been," he continued.
With this, it seems that Somerhalder is finally looking forward to seeing his ex-girlfriend on the show once again.
"The Vampire Diaries" executive producer Julie Plec also told TV Line that there's still a very long way to go for Elena's storylines on the show.
"There is still a chapter of Elena's story left to be told. I'll take Dobrev for whatever she's willing to do to tell that story," she said.
Still, if Dobrev won't return to "The Vampire Diaries" next season, Plec said that the series will continue to focus on Damon and Stefan like they've always done so for the past seven seasons.
"I basically committed to Ian and Paul that when they're ready to be done, I'll be done," she said.
"The Vampire Diaries" season 7 airs Fridays on The CW.
