Facebook will give users recommendations on places that their friends have visited in their current location. This new feature launched by Facebook on Jan. 28, Wednesday was named Place Tips, which will pop up places the user's friends checked out or posted on Facebook on the user's News Feed.
The link when opened will show pictures of the place, hours of service, available menu, and so on. Facebook will constantly check the user's position but if the user feels violated in giving exact location it can be turned off the settings Location Area.
The company, however, has stressed out that the security settings of Facebook has not changed in anyway and will stay the same, according to The Verge.
Facebook users can share their location to people they have approved to share their location with and can only share their location when they choose to. The feature uses GPS and WIFI to find user's location.
The feature is currently available for iPhone users only and is currently on a test run within the New York metropolitan area. The location based application will open photos of establishments posted and visited by friends on the same location. The company is currently collaborating with landmarks and business establishments in New York City to work with the application, according to NBC.
Bluetooth Beacons will also be deployed to selected establishments and landmarks to identify if a Facebook user is on the area to nail down the exact location. The possibility of a mismatch in a crowded New York City is inevitable however so Facebook is launching this as a pilot Application. When this pilot is a success and all technical difficulties have been resolved, it will be rolled out to other cities and will be spread to more users.
