"Beauty and the Beast" will be cancelled by The CW after just four seasons.
According to Variety, the TV show has never been a ratings performer ever since it first premiered on the network. This means that fans are still lucky to have seen their favorite characters for four seasons.
The publication revealed that the show only averaged a 0.6 rating among audiences aged 18 to 49, and received a total of 1.6 million viewers in live plus same day estimates for its first season back in 2012 to 2013.
At the beginning of season 3, the ratings, average and total number of viewers for the series dwindled further.
Still, despite its upcoming cancellation, "Beauty and Beast" continues to have an ardent fan base which includes The CW president Mark Pedowitz.
"I truly like it as a summer series. One of our stated goals for the network was to have year-round programming. We're doing more and more of this, and having 'Beauty and the Beast' gives us some scripted programming for summer. We are developing other things as this point for next summer. So I plan to keep it there," he said.
Meanwhile, the upcoming fourth season of "Beauty and the Beast" will only have a total of 13 episodes. The filming for these episodes ended in November 2015, but the premiere is expected to take place sometime this summer.
Following the network's announcement, fans of the series couldn't help but express their disappointment over the decision.
One fan @Heidi Whitehead wrote, "I would like it if you would give beauty and the beast a chance. I think you should try and advertise it more. I guess, my problem if I missed it, it would be that I did not know when it aired on the CW. You moved it around a lot. I believe that once people see more advertising of Beauty and Beast I believe people would want to see the show. I spoke about it to a lot of people, and they never heard about the show. I say more advertising. Besides, I see a lot of potential for this show."
"Beauty and the Beast" season 4 will premiere on The CW sometime this June.
