After an explosive episode 16, "The Vampire Diaries" (TVD) Season 7 is set to air episode 17 titled "I Went to the Woods." The upcoming segment is directed by showrunner Julie Plec and it explores the aftermath of Damon Salvatore's (Ian Somerhalder) failed plan as well as Stefan Salvatore's (Paul Wesley) struggle to survive. The Ian Somerhalder directed episode 16 "Days of Future Past" featured several shockers. Not only did Damon failed in his attempt to transfer Stefan's mark to himself but he only ended up making matters worse for his brother. Before Damon could rescue his brother, Rayna stabbed Stefan with her sword.

The episode also saw the end of Mary Lou and Nora, who got marked with Rayna's sword. But before the pair bid goodbye to each other, they performed one last magic trick and destroyed the sword and the Phoenix stone, which killed themselves.

Moving on to "The Vampire Diaries" Season 7 episode 17. According to the Cartermatt's synopsis for "I Went to the Woods," after the war ends, Stefan is still caught up in life and death situation. The only thing he can rely on his basic instincts.

A promo video for Episode 17 teases how the events of the previous episode impacted Stefan. The trailer shows that Stefan's body may have been taken over by another entity.

"I'm sorry, do I know you?" Stefan asks Damon while Damon is driving the car.

"That is not Stefan. We don't know who that is," Damon tells on the phone as he is in shock. "I don't want to spend my life babysitting a cheap knock-off of my brother," Damon says as he sees Stefan sucking the blood out of a human in a bar. Scroll down to watch the video.

Will Damon be able to bring Stefan back? The synopsis suggests that Damon attempts to reverse the damage he may have caused, but it seems unattainable. However, Damon's desperation to bring his brother back makes him follow an unexpected lead.

Elsewhere, Matt asks Valerie to pay a visit to Alaric, who has now shifted to Dallas with twins, and ask for help in the search for Stefan. As for Rayna, she is still out there. She has a new threat to deal with and she is still going after Stefan.

In addition, Somerhalder talked about the impact of the events of "Days of Future Past" in Entertainment Weekly's Damon's Diary. According to the actor, episode 16 explored many storylines which had "heavy consequences all building simultaneously into an emotional crescendo and then abruptly ending in tragedy with our hero in the Hell Stone and no way to get him out."
