If at all Elizabeth "Liz" Keen (Megan Boone) is still alive, then "The Blacklist" season 3 episode 19 appeared to show that Raymond "Red" Reddington (James Spader) has no idea.
Episode 19 tried to reveal how lost and devastated Red had become after the death of the former FBI profiler. Red was a man fighting his inner demons and attempting to connect his past and present.
While fans will wait to see whether killing Liz holds waters, the follow-up to episode 18 was clear in delivering something new. It was a welcome twist to shed the case of the week and the larger plot for a more introspective look at Red.
It is effective for any show to bring something different as opposed to following the obvious. The shift serves to have Spader, who is central to the series, dominate the entire episode, and Red definitely did his best again.
In the past, Red gave great speeches and quippy one-liners, besides being the villain who is always a step ahead. However, viewers have an opportunity to experience Red as a more susceptible man that could not save the day.
In episode 19, a haunting feeling surrounded Red, especially the setting on the cold beach and the general atmosphere as he talked with Katarina's ghost. It was fascinating in the way he spoke about loving a woman, losing a child, and trying to amend things. There was anguish and Spader's character could have been referring to either Katarina or Liz.
Surprisingly, the woman turned out to be all in the mind of Red. This could be seen long after she attempted to walk into the ocean, something that Red believed Katarina had done.
Red finds that jewelry and the ghost of Katarina speaking about losing her but saving Liz, clearly presented a positive spin after what seemed to be an hour of tragedy. A central question is whether Red finally came to terms with his past. The episode ended with optimism amid the loss, but fans should wait to see the direction of the show from here.
In this episode, it was evident that Katarina was not the one after Liz, raising the question as who could want her dead. Watch the footage below for more information as you wait to get the next direction in "The Blacklist" season 3 episode 20.
