While it is an accepted fact that Apple will improve the camera technology of its purported iPhone 7 almost like it does with any other next-gen model of the handset. An Apple patent for a folded telephoto camera lens system has given rise to speculations that the next iPhone may come with a dual-lens, DSLR quality camera system.
If the speculations turn out to be true, it will be a deviation from the outmoded digital zoom present in the current flagship iPhone 6s. In fact, KGI securities analyst Ming-Chi Kuo, whose predictions regarding Apple product releases have been correct in the past, had earlier supported claims that the iPhone 7 will boast the dual camera system, Apple Insider reported.
Earlier rumors regarding the next-gen iPhone hinted that the iPhone 7 will be thinner compared to the existing iPhone 6s, but offer almost DSLR quality photography. The rumors also claimed that the small bump in the region of the camera will possibly be removed too. Contrary to these, an Apple patent disclosed that the handset will come with an ultra-compact telephoto camera lens.
The patent further revealed that the camera will have a folded "r" design, something akin to the periscope of an old submarine. This feature will help light to reflect from a mirror that will be secondary to the dual lenses. In addition, the evolution of the elements of the lens will also help to generate sufficient telescopic effect for optical zoom, the patent suggested.
The dual lenses of the handset will function in tandem to create superior quality photos as well as videos. At the same time, the lenses will have their own specific features that will change the way in which the camera of the iPhone 7 will work concurrently. It will be possible to use both the lenses at the same time, iDigital Times reported.
For instance, while one lens can zoom in, the other can zoom out at the same time. Users will be able to see both the shots on a split-screen in the Apple Camera App. While in the midst of capturing a photo or video, users will also have the option to touch on the screen to make it zoom in with one of the two lenses.
Moreover, the patent suggests that the next-gen iPhone will also have the aptitude either to store both sequences independently, or combine them. This feature is also expected to be functional with Slo-Mo videos. As the camera of the device will not zoom in digitally through software, the zoomed image will be of much superior quality compared to that of the iPhone 6s.
