After countless rumors, "Space Jam 2" is finally confirmed and it will be no other than LeBron James who will take the torch from Michael Jordan. With the Cleveland Cavaliers star siding with the Toon Squad, it would be interesting to see who the Monstars will recruit for their cause this time around.
The film is set to be directed by "Fast and Furious" director Justin Lin, while Andrew Dodge will take the helm as screenwriter, Hollywood Reporter reported. Initially, James' camp denied the star's involvement in a potential sequel, but after signing a contract with Warner Bros. in August 2015, it was strongly believed that both parties are indeed gunning for "Space Jam 2." After signing the contract, he teased in an interview that he is into the idea of reviving the popular franchise and even starring on it.
However, fans should not expect the film to come anytime soon as James' schedule is loaded at the moment. Aside from his commitment with the Cleveland Cavaliers to go deep in this year's playoffs, James will also compete for the gold medal in the 2016 Rio Olympics.
Although details are scarce as of the moment, it can be assumed that the sequel will use the same formula of its predecessor. Aside from Jordan, what added to 'Space Jam's" appeal was the appearance of other NBA stars in Patrick Ewing, Charles Barkley, Larry Johnson, Mugsy Bogues and Shawn Bradley. With the NBA not lacking new breed of NBA stars, CBS Sports made a list of current crop of superstars who should join James in the proposed sequel.
First on the list is Blake Griffin, who is popular for his funny skits with Kia commercials and he even starred with Marvin the Martian in a Jordan commercial. Moreover, his mesmerizing dunks will be a huge plus to moviegoers.
Next up is James' teammate, Kyrie Irving, who is also known as Uncle Drew. Some may call favoritism on this one but Irving has been a delight to watch in his Uncle Drew commercials with Pepsi as well. Another popular vote is Carmelo Anthony, who has a strong following of his own as he plays for the New York Knicks.
Sacramento Kings star DeMarcus Cousins also fits the bill of playing for the Monstars for his tough personality. Lastly, Cavs' forward Tristan Thompson is said to succeed the role of Shawn Bradley, who is a tough and solid defender.
