KFC customers in Hong Kong will have a new way of eating their favorite fried chicken. As part of KFC 'finger lickin' good' ad campaign, the company will be unveiling the first ever edible fingernail polish, targeting the young consumers who both love fashion and food.
KFC's edible fingernail polish will be available in two flavors, according to New York Times. Consumers can enjoy their all-time choices: original and hot and spicy flavors. Ogilvy & Mather Group, the agency running the ad campaign will promote the product as a "lickable, edible fingernail polish."
"Yes, it is actually a real thing," Anna Mugglestone, marketing and communications director for Ogilvy & Mather Group in Hong Kong, the agency running the Hong Kong campaign told the publication. "I tried it myself in the office when they were doing testing."
Mugglestone said that the edible fingernail polish tastes like real chicken. She added that she was amazed on how KFC did it. When asked why the company unveiled such product, she claimed that it was a way to remind the younger generation of the "the great taste and good times the brand stands for."
KFC's edible fingernail polish was made in collaboration with the maker for KFC chicken spices, McCormick & Company. The new product is yet to be produced in huge volume, and is targeted to reach the market in the second half of 2016.
When it comes to acceptance of KFC's edible fingernail polish, the Ogilvy & Mather Group director said that they have received good feedbacks, but also harsh criticisms from some online users.
To eat the edible fingernail polish, KFC told NPR to simply apply it and dry like a regular nail polish, and then lick it. It is unclear what ingredients are incorporated in the new product, but KFC claimed that it is made from natural ingredients.
KFC is not the first company to introduce an edible fingernail polish in the market. In the past, Kid Licks offered three nail polishes formulated from fruits and vegetables. The polishes that come in sour carrot orange, beet red and barley grass green were safe even for kids.
Before the mass production, KFC is asking Hong Kong customers, which flavor they would prefer. A poll was even conducted online to check the consumers preference.
